London Gazette; Jul 1865; Listed as Lieut on the 'Pinnace' report of engagement with a Dhow near Zanzibar. He gets good mention and the Capt says "I must leave Lt Theobald to finish this report, as I regret to say I became insensible from loss of blood" . Charles got "spear wound of left wrist, very severe, spear went through joint".

"Southend Rugby Club has a long and proud history dating back to 1870, which was a year before the Rugby Union was formed in London. An Admiral Charles Barstow Theobald gave a set of 'By-laws and rules' to lads playing football at the local Milton Hall sports ground, and so the club was formed. It was called 'Southend Foot Ball Club', and a young player of the time called Jimmy Cotgrove reported that "we trained with paper chases!" ".
