The IGI says birth about 1795, burial 25th March 1797. This would make him illegitimate if nothing else. But I can't see his chr on the EH PR's in Hereford CRO. I CAN see the 25th March 1797 record but it looks like chr to me not buried ! "James the son of James Powell xxx and Mary his wife was 'Christon' 25th March 1797".
I now think this is the chap who is living with parents next door to the Dog Inn in the census . Going to go with that for now, but still not 100% certain;
1841 Census; Living as head (age 40) in Ewyas Harold village, Herefordshire with an Ann Gwillim (70) - presumably an aunt ? Father is living a couple of houses away. Occupation; Farmer.
1851 Census; Living (age 50) as son at Dog Farm, Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire with wife, son and 2 farm servants. Occupation; Farmers Son. PoB: EHarold.
Too many James Powell deaths around this time to narrow down.
1861 Cenus; Can't find.
James married Elizabeth. (Elizabeth was born in 1819 in St Devereux, Herefordshire.)
