  Notes:

ALL POWELL INFO 'ABOVE' HERE IS A LITTLE SPECULATIVE - but seems to hang together.

Originally thought YoB was ~1811 due to age on '41 census. However death record indicates YoB actually ~1802, this leads to possible parents James and Mary after finding EH chr. However we don't know exactly where he was born, and not all parishes (inc Dulas) are on the IGI. We do know however that his mother is Mary ('cos mentioned in his will) and that he had a brother James so seems likely that the parents shown as correct.

Later found bapt in Hereford CRO on EH PR's "George the son of James and Mary Powell was bapt Feb 1802" (can't actually read the date).

FHS Wedding Search;
GEORGE POWELL Bride ELIZABETH PRITCHARD Day 11 Month 09 Year 1834 Place of marriage EWYAS HAROLD (HEF) Licence? L Notes +(W)DEWLAS. This definately confirmed (that Elizabeth is nee Pritchard) when got Ambrose's birth cert.

HOWEVER; further information was that he was a widower at the time of that marriage.
There is an Ann Powell buried in Clodock on 27 May 1833, abode = PLATCH and age = 26. So this is almost certainly his first wife, and thus George jnrs mother. Then found their marriage.
Later also found the marriage in the EH PR's in Hereford CRO "George Powell a bachelor otp and Ann Christopher a spinster otp were married by licence 2nd Day of December 1829. Proper signatures. Witnesses were James Powell and Mary Lewes" Was the James Powell his father or the older brother ?

Also found the second marriage in EH PR's in Hereford CRO "George Powell a widower of the parish of Dewlas (Dulas) in the Co of Hereford and Elizabeth Pritchard a spinster otp where married by licence on this 11th day of September 1834. Proper signatures. Witnesses were Jas (James) Powell and xxxx Pritchard".

Dore Workhouse in Victorian Times, by Nancy Elliot "As workhouses went, the Dore one was small, built for eighty to a hundred people. By 1836 the Act had been implemented in Hereford where a workhouse for three hundred had been built (now part of the County Hospital buildings). Building began, too, in Ross-on-Wye, Kington, Ledbury, Weobley, Bromyard and Leominster. But it was not until April 11th, 1837 that the first meeting of the Dore Union Guardians took place. They met at the Red Lion, Abbey Dore (the site now of Abbey Dore Court). The elected Guardians, each chosen by the ratepayers of his parish, joined ex-officio members from the local gentry and clergy. Those at the first meeting included Edward Bolton Clive, Esq., M.P. for Hereford City, the Dean of Hereford, E.G. Head, Esq., Colonel Clive, Thomas Delahay, Esq., W. Seward Wood Esq. and Henry Scudamore, Esq. Among the locally elected, tenant or freehold farmers, were GEORGE POWELL from DULAS, William Bill from Kentchurch, Philip Lewis of the Keyo, Wormbridge, and William Matthews of Abbey Dore. " In the 1841 census he is the only George Powell over 21 in Dulas, so I presume this is him ?!

1839 ; Ambrose's birth cert. gives George's occupation as Farmer. And signature is 'the mark of' so presumably he couldn't write (but he signed his will?).

1841 Census (age circa 30) living as head of household at Platch Farm, Dulas with wife, 4 children, and 3 agricultural labourers (John WILLIAMS 18, Henry Herbert 55 and Sarah LEWIS 16). Actually Williams and Lewis may NOT be agricultural labourers, hard to read.
NB; Looks like Platch Farm on census, but map says Plash Farm. However farm is actually called Platch Farm if you visit it.

His death cert is ; 30th March 1849 at Dulas. George Powell, male, 47 years, farmer. Diseased heart. Certified. Informant; Ann Duce (Bruce?) 'in attendance' Dulas.

Hereford Times; Sat 7 April 1849; Deaths; 30th ult, after a long and painful illness, aged 47, Mr George Powell of the Plash Farm, Dulas, in this county.

Also found burial record in the EH PR's at Hereford CRO ; George Powell of The Platch (Parish of Dulas) buried in EH aged 47 on April 2 1849.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukhfhs/mipi.html ; he is mentioned on headstone of first wife Ann in Clodock churchyard. Definately correct people as know she is 'of Platch'. Didn't see this grave when I was down there, will need to look again !

Shaky 'George Powell' signature
Witnesses Charles Proberts (?) and 'X' the mark of John Foster.
Will registered 17 day of July 1850. Effects sworn under one hundred pounds and the testator died on the 30th day of March 1849.

NB; A Wm Lewis of The Garn died in 1821 and left the property to his wife, but then to his son Wm. Presumably this is the person occupying the EH land. Interestingly a Mary CHRISTOPHER (possible for Ann's mother) was one of the witnesses to this will. Possible for Ann's mother's surname is Lewis.

In the 1804 will of Ann Lewis, wife of Thomas Lewis of Castlebach, she leaves a property to her great nephew, David WATKINS, unless he has already been left The Plash at Dulas by her husband. Watkins keeps cropping up.
